Powerful back-to-back earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela’s Caribbean coast Wednesday evening, killing at least 32 people and injuring more than 700, according to the nation’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez. She declared a state of emergency and described the coastal state of La Guaira as a disaster zone, with dozens of collapsed buildings and the main international airport closed. In response, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced via social media that the United States is immediately sending search and rescue teams, medical supplies, and other humanitarian aid to the country. Other governments, including Qatar, Mexico, and El Salvador, also offered assistance. The quakes, among the strongest in Venezuela in over a century, caused panic and damage in multiple states, with rescue operations ongoing.
