Amazon reported strong second-quarter results Thursday, sending shares up more than 9% in extended trading. AWS revenue rose 37% to $42.2 billion, its steepest quarterly increase in 18 periods, with operating income up 64% to $16.6 billion. CEO Andy Jassy credited the acceleration to customers picking AWS for its extensive offerings in both core cloud services and artificial intelligence. Overall sales climbed 20% to $200.6 billion, and operating income reached $27.5 billion. Net income jumped to $62.6 billion, partly reflecting $53.4 billion from Anthropic-related investments. However, free cash flow swung to negative $7.6 billion because of heavy AI infrastructure spending, and Amazon raised its 2026 capital-expenditure projection to $220 billion, saying demand could still outpace capacity into 2027.
