“After reviewing the events of Yoni’s life and death, the producer said to me, ‘Leave it alone. A great biography of a great life needs the perspective of decades,’”

In a 2001 introduction to a book of his brother’s letters, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote that a British television producer, soon after Jonathan “Yoni” Netanyahu was killed during the 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue, urged him to set aside a planned dramatization because a worthy life story needed the passage of time. Netanyahu said that counsel had proven right. Fifty years after the raid, now commemorated as Operation Yonatan, Netanyahu told JNS that Israel recognizes his brother’s sacrifice and that he thinks of him constantly. At a July 12 Jerusalem ceremony, President Isaac Herzog called the operation a legacy of courage and responsibility that belongs to the whole nation, while Netanyahu praised it as a daring mission that brought hostages home and struck a blow against terrorism.
