At Saturday’s Fox News interview, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Cuba as unusually capable in spying and political manipulation, pointing to Ana Belén Montes’s espionage conviction. He called her infiltration among the most severe U.S. intelligence lapses and the Defense Intelligence Agency’s worst breaches. Rubio also said Cuba is the only nation that manages to keep operatives inside U.S. institutions serving with no compensation. He further alleged that Cuba influenced every communist-aligned leftist insurgency that affected Latin American governments over the past four decades. He said Cuba participates in a financed, coordinated network behind U.S. protests supporting Antifa, Hamas, and Nicolás Maduro and objecting to ICE. Rubio added that Cuban loyalists in universities and news media help recruit such unpaid operatives.
