“vigilant and prepared to make changes and continue to keep on top of this issue”
Australia’s Labor government plans to introduce legislation on Monday that would increase penalties for social media companies and expand the authority of the online safety regulator, following concerns that the nation’s ban on under-16s using platforms such as Instagram and TikTok is not being enforced effectively. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that technology companies are not adequately following the law and that many minors remain active online, adding that because digital platforms constantly evolve, future administrations will need to remain watchful and ready to adjust policies. Communications Minister Anika Wells noted that a teenager she met was able to open an account without being asked her age, and said the eSafety Commissioner would gain the power to demand internal documents from tech firms to verify compliance.
