“in co-ordination with our partners”
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country would collaborate with Oman and unspecified allies to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to reopen the vital shipping lane. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, promptly rejected the plan, stating that only Tehran is permitted to perform demining operations under the interim ceasefire agreement signed with the United States. The proposed UK- and French-led mission comes as the fragile truce in the region remains tense following recent naval exchanges. Control of the strait, a key route for global oil and gas shipments, was a major sticking point in negotiations, with the initial 60-day deal granting Iran sole demining authority alongside Omani and Gulf coordination on future administration.
