President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine’s defense manufacturers have met quality benchmarks for a domestically built missile defense system, after a meeting with security officials. Writing on social media, he said he expects operational capability in 2026–2027. Ukraine has been developing the FREYJA system as a more affordable, high-performing alternative to the US-designed Patriot systems supplied by the United States and NATO members since Russia’s 2022 invasion. The country remains exposed because interceptor missiles are scarce, and Zelensky has urged allies to provide more of their own stocks while domestic production catches up. The announcement comes as Ukraine faces continued Russian aerial bombardment.
