Giorgia Meloni said Italy “had no intention of revising the decision” to suspend open-border rules
“had no intention of revising the decision”
Reported August 8, 2026 by thejournal.ie. Checked word for word against that report.
Spain announced it would impose temporary controls on arrivals from Italy, starting at midnight Saturday and lasting until Sept. 7, as a migration dispute between the two EU allies worsened. The step responds to Italy’s suspension of Schengen open-border rules with Spain after a deadly mass crossing from Morocco into the Spanish territory of Ceuta. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the suspension would remain in place until Aug. 15, when, Italy says, Spanish authorities expect another surge. Spain has condemned the Italian measure as unfair, discriminatory and damaging to EU unity, and has threatened a matching response. Meloni’s office said Italy would not yield to external ultimatums and would revisit the suspension only once it was confident there were no security threats or fresh migration toward Europe.
