President Donald Trump announced Aug. 9 that White House staff secretary Will Scharf will become White House counsel starting Sept. 1, succeeding David Warrington, who is leaving for private practice. In a social media post, Trump praised Scharf’s work in his current job and as head of the National Capital Planning Commission, saying he knows Scharf well. Scharf, previously on Trump’s personal legal team in the Supreme Court immunity case, currently manages presidential paperwork, actions, speeches, and press releases. As counsel he will advise Trump and staff on legal matters. The appointment came the day after Todd Blanche was confirmed as attorney general, and at least seven former personal lawyers now hold administration positions. Separately, Scharf’s commission had approved a $400 million White House ballroom that a federal appeals court ruled unlawful.
