Trump says Alito is "one of the Greatest of All Time" after Alito says he'll remain on the bench

President Trump welcomed Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s announcement that he will remain on the bench, praising him in a social media post. Alito, 76, told the Wall Street Journal he intends to serve another term, putting to rest speculation stirred by a false NPR report that he was retiring. Some Republicans had urged Alito to step down before January, when a possible Democratic Senate majority could complicate confirming a successor. Senate Majority Leader John Thune had said Republican control of the Senate and White House made that timing preferable. Trump’s supportive reaction stood out because he has often criticized conservative justices who ruled against him. Alito staying matters because it narrows any opportunity Trump would have to name another justice.
