Three continental soccer bodies — UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC — have publicly turned against FIFA President Gianni Infantino after a discarded proposal to sell a financial stake in the World Cup, accusing him of breaking trust and acting as if the sport answers to him. The groups’ open letter, released Monday and backed by their presidents and general secretaries, also criticized FIFA’s internal response as treating a serious lapse as merely a communications problem. Separately, Norwegian and English federations have withdrawn support, with Norway calling for Infantino to resign. In a social media post Monday night, President Donald Trump pushed back, praising Infantino’s leadership and warning FIFA against replacing him, saying the recent World Cup had been unusually successful and profitable. FIFA has also stood behind Infantino, casting the criticism as an organized effort against him.
