Donald Trump says Iran should “put up the white flag of surrender” in Strait of Hormuz dispute

During an Aug. 17 Fox News interview with Trey Yingst, President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman if it obstructed a U.S.-Iran arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz and called on Iran to give up fighting. The remarks come as Iranian and Omani officials negotiate navigation rules for the waterway, which Iran has blockaded since February, while Trump insists the strait is under U.S. control and has even floated declaring it U.S. territory. Iran counters that the waterway will stay Iranian. The strait carries a large share of the world's energy supplies. Trump also said he is not hurrying to reach a deal, despite Democratic efforts to win Congress in the midterms, and disclosed a private line of communication with Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
