President Donald Trump is using India’s elections to press Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed bill that would require photo identification and citizenship proof for federal voting. Trump said on Truth Social that India’s chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, had recently asked his administration how U.S. elections can occur without a national photo-ID mandate. Trump also noted India’s last election had 646 million voters, nearly all voting in person and each required to show government-issued ID. U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor endorsed Trump’s call. The House passed the bill in February, 218–213, but Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has said it will not advance. Republicans say the bill secures elections; Democrats warn it could disenfranchise eligible voters.
