Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated the agency worked with Anthropic to approve the release. This episode reflects Washington’s heightened scrutiny of cutting-edge AI releases, but the government’s role in choosing which customers can access these systems has sparked criticism. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman weighed in, saying he has no problem with thorough safety checks but objects to authorities selecting which users get access. Altman’s own company, OpenAI, also postponed a broad launch of GPT-5.6 at the government’s request, instead offering it only to a limited set of approved partners.
