“No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary!”
The Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s executive order that sought to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas. In a 6–3 vote, the justices affirmed the long-established reading of the 14th Amendment that anyone born on American soil is a citizen. Trump responded that the ruling was “too bad for our Country” and argued that Congress could resolve the matter through legislation, asserting that a constitutional amendment is not required. The decision represents a significant defeat for the administration’s immigration agenda and reaffirms a core principle of U.S. citizenship law dating to the Reconstruction era. The court also issued other major rulings on transgender sports, presidential power, and gun rights.
