South Africa is proceeding with a plan to create a separate state-owned entity to run the national electricity grid, a reform the presidency describes as essential for dependable power and a competitive market. In July, President Cyril Ramaphosa approved the first-phase findings of the Eskom Restructuring Task Team and said he was pleased with the group’s pace and thoroughness. Eskom’s board, led by Mteto Nyati, supports the move but insists that the utility’s finances, lender agreements, and shareholder interests be protected during implementation. The task team also recommended forming a working group to tackle municipal arrears that have reached at least 119 billion rand. The restructuring is intended to stabilise electricity supply, keep power affordable, and help the economy grow.
