Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily allowed construction of President Donald Trump’s large White House ballroom to continue while the Supreme Court considers a longer-term stay. The order came after lower courts ruled Trump lacked congressional authorization and ordered a halt. Trump responded on Truth Social, welcoming the decision and extolling the project as extraordinarily important. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, which sued, called the order interim and not a final ruling. The partially built facility, scheduled for completion in 2028, would be bigger than the White House and West Wing combined and include a security bunker.
