Mark Carney says Canada will "not return to our old relationship" after U.S. tariffs
“not return to our old relationship”

Following the collapse of urgent talks, the United States placed 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods, and Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will impose equivalent retaliatory duties starting September 8. The response targets steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Carney said Canada had offered to remove existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos if Washington made substantial cuts, but the U.S. introduced fresh demands at the close that Ottawa rejected. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada refused a favorable American offer. No further meetings are scheduled. Carney added that the U.S. has fundamentally shifted and the two allies must now interact on a different footing, casting doubt on the continental trade deal.
