“I have paused the 50 percent Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!”
Reported August 22, 2026 by wcbm.com. Checked word for word against that report.
President Donald Trump had said Tuesday that he was delaying the planned 50% tariffs on Canadian goods for three days, asserting that Canada and the U.S. had reached an agreement pending final documents. But overnight, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office and Prime Minister Mark Carney said no deal was concluded. USTR claimed Canada introduced new conditions and retreated from previous commitments; Carney said he was halting negotiations and recalled Canadian negotiators, blaming sudden American demands he described as unfair and damaging to trust. Consequently, the higher tariffs on many Canadian products are set to take effect, and Canada has vowed to respond with equal counter-tariffs.
