Mark Carney says U.S. offer "not enough to meet our objectives for Canadians" in trade talks
“not enough to meet our objectives for Canadians”

Prime Minister Mark Carney walked away from U.S.-Canada trade negotiations after saying the latest American offer did not go far enough to serve Canadian interests. The talks, under way since July, collapsed Friday; Carney ordered negotiators home and announced retaliatory tariffs effective September 8 against President Donald Trump’s new 50 percent duties on roughly $20 billion of Canadian exports. Trump responded on Truth Social, accusing Canada of wanting U.S. advantages without statehood. The duties took effect Saturday and hit about 5 percent of Canadian exports, including wine, dairy, cement, clothing, and hockey equipment. Because Canada ships 72 percent of its goods exports to the U.S., the dispute threatens one of the world's largest trade relationships and raises questions about the USMCA pact.
