Xi Jinping: "unique and important role in the region"

During an August 24 meeting in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Jordan’s regional standing as he received King Abdullah II, whose country is caught between Washington and Tehran amid fallout from the February 28 U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. According to China’s foreign ministry, Xi called for an immediate ceasefire and political settlement of disputes and said the sovereignty and security of regional countries, including Jordan, must be respected. He also urged a comprehensive, just, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue and resumption of Israeli-Palestinian talks under the two-state framework. Abdullah’s visit, which began August 18, was his ninth to China since taking the throne in 1999. The sides signed agreements on diplomacy, trade, and supply chains and jointly asked for normal shipping to resume through the Strait of Hormuz.
