President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States would levy 50% duties on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel beginning Jan. 1, 2027, after bilateral trade negotiations collapsed. In a social media post, Trump blamed Canada’s barriers against American farm products and claimed a $60 billion U.S. trade deficit. He framed the new duties as ending Canada’s favored treatment, saying the relationship would change. The announcement followed a U.S. decision two days earlier to impose 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports, about 5% of Canada’s annual exports. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney threatened dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting Sept. 8. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer called the economic effect small and said no further meetings were scheduled.
