“Building at home and diversifying our trade abroad”

After U.S. trade talks collapsed Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an $11 billion contract for six Coast Guard icebreakers at Chantier Davie shipyards, with delivery from 2032 to 2038. Speaking in Lévis, Quebec, he framed the project as part of a strategy of domestic infrastructure and expanded export markets, pointing to a federally backed $10 billion hydroelectric expansion at Churchill Falls. Earlier that day, President Trump threatened 50% tariffs on cars, parts, and steel beginning Jan. 1. Carney called that unsurprising and said it would hurt U.S. workers. He also asserted Canadians had tariff-free access to 1.5 billion consumers and expected to double that through deals with ASEAN and India. Some commentators questioned whether spending alone can replace private investment.
