During an escalating U.S.-Canada trade standoff, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social a combative message aimed at Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, after proposing to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America because, he said, the U.S. expects less business with Ontario. His post followed his announcement that tariffs on Canadian vehicles and steel would rise to 50 percent on New Year’s Day, and Ford’s crude response to that threat. Trump also insulted Ford personally. Negotiations on a new trade deal collapsed over the weekend, and Canada has promised matching tariffs after Labour Day.
