He also denied rumors that he would interfere with French-speaking Canadians, dismissing the allegation as a fabrication by a prime minister trying to regain support in Quebec and voicing fondness for French Canadians. Canada was expected to announce retaliatory tariffs; Prime Minister Mark Carney backed targeted measures to protect workers and businesses rather than mirroring U.S. tariffs. Earlier, Trump threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel and demanded Canadian leaders comply. Carney responded that Ottawa would not accept being treated as a subordinate of Washington.
