Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods after President Trump placed duties on Canadian imports last week. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the steps are meant to protect Canadian businesses and workers and to ensure fair competition. Trump, anticipating the announcement, singled out Canada as his hardest negotiating partner, saying it acts as though it deserves special treatment despite not being an American state and that this approach will no longer be accepted. Earlier Tuesday he suggested renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America.” Negotiations broke down late last week, and the dispute is significant because U.S.-Canadian supply chains, especially autos, are deeply integrated.
