“Iran is trying to coax us to withdraw from southern Lebanon by force. And in essence, Israel, Lebanon and the United States are telling Iran — 'It is none of your business. You have no role in Lebanon. Neither you, nor Hezbollah nor any terrorist organization.'”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited southern Lebanon on Tuesday, where he addressed Israeli troops occupying territory as part of an ongoing campaign against the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Netanyahu told soldiers Israel would not withdraw until the threat from Hezbollah was eliminated. His remarks follow a recent security agreement between Israel and Lebanon, brokered with American help, that outlines steps for a long-term Israeli exit but keeps two pilot zones under Israeli control. Netanyahu characterized the deal as a rejection of Iranian influence. He stated that Iran was attempting to force Israel’s departure through military pressure, and that by contrast, Israel, Lebanon, and the United States together were telling Iran it has no role in Lebanon—nor do Hezbollah or any other terrorist group. The situation underscores ongoing tensions over Iran’s involvement in the region and Israel’s refusal to abide by a separate US-Iran truce that called for an end to Israeli operations in Lebanon.
