Donald Trump: "Not coal, you don't want coal — you mean clean, beautiful coal?"
“Not coal, you don't want coal — you mean clean, beautiful coal?”

During a NORAD Santa-tracking call at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump and first lady Melania Trump spoke with 8-year-old Amelia from Anthony, Kansas, who said she hoped Santa would not bring her coal. Trump joked in response that she had it wrong and coal is desirable. The exchange underscores coal’s importance for the Navajo Nation, where about 10,000 homes lack electricity. The Navajo Transitional Energy Company provides free coal each winter to 110 Navajo chapters and a dozen Hopi villages, an effort expanded after the 2019 closure of the Kayenta Mine. The company spends roughly $3 million annually; this season it made 130 bulk deliveries and served more than 5,100 visitors.
