After a U.S. military operation removed Nicolás Maduro and brought him to New York to await trial on federal drug trafficking charges, the Trump administration announced an oil agreement with Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez. The deal, negotiated with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, gives the U.S. majority control over more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan reserves through private business partnerships. President Trump said the arrangement would expand U.S. reserves by more than 100 percent without taxpayer funding. Rubio called the pact a major benefit for both countries, saying it would bring nearly $100 billion in private investment and support jobs. Rodríguez also praised the agreement, citing modernization and economic recovery. Maduro has accused Washington of trying to seize Venezuela’s oil.
