“terrible negligence on the part of those who stored explosives right next to people”

A Russian strike Friday evening on an ammunition depot west of Kyiv killed at least 38 people and wounded 52, Ukrainian officials said. The site, which held shells, mines, and drones, ignited blasts and fires that reached homes in Myla. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the high death toll indicated serious disregard for civilian safety in choosing where the munitions were kept, and he promised an investigation involving prosecutors, the interior ministry, the security service, and the military command. He also said the depot should not have existed there. The attack is reportedly Ukraine’s deadliest Russian strike this year; Russia describes its bombardment as a response to Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia. Frontline casualties are not disclosed.
