The remark came amid a broader pattern of Trump floating the idea of acquiring Canada. Months later, after beginning his second term, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, prompting retaliatory tariffs from then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. A subsequent Politico poll found that 52% of Canadians now report feeling very proud of their nationality, a surge that analysts attribute to Trump’s aggressive trade and annexation rhetoric. The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, negotiated during Trump’s first term, recently came up for renewal, with negotiations expected.
