Speaking on Apple’s fiscal Q3 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook linked the company’s new $60 billion Texas manufacturing program to its goal of covering every stage of U.S. chip production domestically. The investment is part of a previously announced $600 billion, four-year U.S. manufacturing commitment, and comes just before Cook hands the CEO role to hardware chief John Ternus on Sept. 1. Apple will assemble Mac mini computers and advanced AI servers at a new Houston facility, and it recently reached a Broadcom agreement for custom silicon and wireless components expected to exceed $30 billion. The spending is tied to tariff pressures: Apple’s latest gross margin was 50.1%, including tariff refunds, and management forecast 47%–48% for the September quarter partly because of surging memory costs.
