Mark Carney: "the Americans stop doing memes"

Canada will begin applying tariffs on roughly $28 billion of U.S. products on Sept. 8. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the stance taken by American negotiators would push vital Canadian sectors, such as auto manufacturing, into dependence on U.S. firms or cause them to vanish. He made the comments after the Liberal Party secured three byelection victories on Monday and noted that earlier discussions had included some beneficial elements before they fell apart last month. Carney added that the United States was seeking concessions that could harm the auto industry and restrict Canada’s capacity to engage in other trade agreements. He said Canada is prepared to resume talks only when the United States adopts a more serious approach.
