“much more beautiful than the day it was built!”
President Donald Trump’s renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which he had promised would be “much more beautiful than the day it was built,” has been overshadowed by problems and legal action. After the $16.4 million, no-bid project faced issues such as peeling sealant and persistent algae within weeks, Trump blamed vandals without providing evidence. Former Olympic canoeist David Carter Hearn, 67, was arrested June 19 near the pool and has now been indicted on a felony charge of destroying government property, according to court documents. Federal prosecutors, citing witness accounts, allege Hearn forcefully pulled up pool sealant. His lawyers call the charges an unjust effort to shift blame, and Hearn says he only touched the peeling liner out of curiosity. The case comes amid broader scrutiny of the administration’s handling of protests in Washington.
