Donald Tusk says “only idiots or traitors” would celebrate AfD’s German state election win

After Germany’s far-right AfD finished first in Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt, Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, made a scathing remark about anyone who would take pleasure in the result. The party fell short of an absolute majority, but its showing was still a postwar milestone in Germany, putting the far right near state-level power. European leaders disagreed sharply in public reaction: France and Italy voiced alarm, and Poland’s foreign minister called the outcome worrying, while Elon Musk congratulated the AfD, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán applauded, and Donald Trump shared the result without comment. A Russian envoy also spoke approvingly. The result heightened concern over far-right momentum in Europe with several national elections approaching.
