On Sunday, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social calling for New Mexico to be renamed “New America,” sharing an image reflecting the altered name. The suggestion followed Snopes’s debunking of a satirical post falsely claiming that Trump had signed such an order. His message also accused the state of election cheating. The exchange came after Trump used executive orders to rename Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico. New Mexico’s Democratic senators, representatives, and governor immediately rejected the renaming idea, saying the current name predates the United States and carries deep history and culture. No official order has changed the state’s name.
