“We will make whole the province of B.C.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Columbia Premier David Eby announced a multibillion-dollar infrastructure and resource development pact in Vancouver, securing long-sought federal funding for projects including a north coast power line, port expansions, and the replacement of the Massey Tunnel. Eby also obtained a firm extension of the oil tanker moratorium off B.C.’s north coast while conceding that Ottawa alone controls pipeline approvals. The agreement addresses Eby’s complaint that federal industrial carbon pricing puts B.C. at a disadvantage relative to Alberta—a concern Carney directly responded to by promising to compensate the province. The deal, which Eby valued at up to $20 billion, includes commitments on LNG terminals, mining, shipbuilding, and environmental protections.
