“FSD (full self-driving) drives slowly through neighborhood streets and this was a high-speed crash!”
A Texas man, Michael Butler, has been charged with manslaughter after his Tesla Model 3 struck a home in Katy in June, killing 76-year-old Martha Avila. Authorities said the vehicle entered the residence at high speed and that Butler told them a driver-assistance system was active. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, responded on social media by questioning that account, noting that the company’s Full Self-Driving feature operates at low speeds in residential areas and could not have caused a high-velocity impact. Tesla’s artificial-intelligence chief separately claimed the driver manually overrode the system by fully pressing the accelerator. Avila’s family has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against both Butler and Tesla, alleging design flaws. Federal safety agencies are investigating.
