“will be equal partners in this project”
At a Thursday evening press conference, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a proposed oil pipeline from Edmonton to British Columbia’s south coast, following the existing Trans Mountain route. Smith had earlier pushed for a northern route, but faced firm opposition from BC Premier David Eby and Coastal First Nations to lifting the federal tanker ban there. Carney stated that the federal government and Alberta would share the project as equal partners, with a significant ownership stake for Indigenous communities. The Trans Mountain Corporation will lead construction, while Pembina Pipeline Corporation will hold a 10 percent stake. Alberta’s submission estimates costs between $35.2 billion and $43.7 billion. No private-sector proponent has stepped forward, drawing concern from analysts, and environmental groups warn of spill risks to coastal ecosystems. A timeline remains unset, though Alberta targets a 2027 start.
