“"They were not there for us!!!"”
President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social account Thursday that the United States’ relationship with NATO is not mutual, calling the arrangement “ridiculous.” Accompanying a chart showing disproportionate U.S. defense spending compared to other members, Trump’s comment that allies “were not there for us” continues his longstanding criticism of European partners, particularly over their response to the war in Iran. Washington has already begun reducing its military commitments, urging Europe to assume primary responsibility for its own defense. The remarks come just days before a NATO summit scheduled for July 7–8 in Ankara, where 32 member states will gather. The alliance had previously agreed under Trump’s pressure to raise defense spending targets to 5% of GDP by 2035.
