Trump says US is "developing a large Military presence" in Greenland under new deal
“developing a large Military presence”

President Donald Trump announced Friday that the U.S. had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory, on long-term security control there. He said Washington would begin building a military footprint on the Arctic island. The announcement followed months of friction with European leaders after Trump's January threat to take Greenland, which sparked a NATO crisis; he later said at Davos he would not use force and had a framework with NATO's Mark Rutte. It remains unclear how much the deal changes existing U.S. rights, including at Pituffik Space Base, operated since a 1951 defense treaty. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen backed the deal, citing Greenland's sovereignty, while Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said NATO would largely handle Arctic security. Signing is expected at the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday.
