Donald Trump asks "What is the purpose of the United Nations?" at UN General Assembly

President Trump is scheduled to speak Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, returning to a forum he criticized sharply during a previous address, when he rebuked the institution and its members. The speech follows political and legal difficulties, approval below 40% amid concerns about the economic effects of the Iran war, and a lawsuit by CNN, MS NOW and Politico after the White House barred them. With midterm elections under two months away, Trump is seeking diplomatic wins before hosting China’s Xi Jinping in Washington. He is expected to portray himself as a peacemaker, defend his Iran policy, and emphasize that Iran must never obtain nuclear arms; U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz said he will discuss confronting global problems. Trump is expected to meet Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other leaders, while Iran’s president is scheduled to speak.
