Trump says of Russia-Ukraine war: "we’re going to make a deal"

While meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters he expected negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine to end the fighting. Trump had predicted during the 2024 campaign that he would quickly bring the war to a close but has not yet succeeded. Zelenskyy said he was hopeful. Addressing the assembly the following day, the Ukrainian leader urged nations to restrict commerce with Russia and deny Moscow financing and fighters from abroad, saying such support extends the conflict. Russia invaded Ukraine more than 4½ years ago; the war has caused heavy casualties and worldwide economic effects.
