Xi Jinping says China's development aims and "making America great again" could be pursued together

Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a state visit through Sept. 25 at President Donald Trump’s invitation. In a written arrival message at Joint Base Andrews, Xi urged the two countries to treat each other as collaborators rather than opponents, saying their interests are tightly linked and that China’s development aims and Trump’s stated objective for the United States could be pursued together. He also advocated a steady bilateral relationship centered on cooperation, with managed competition and limited disagreements. Trump and first lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan. The White House planned a formal arrival ceremony Thursday with military honors and a flyover, plus a state dinner, followed by talks on bilateral and global issues and a Friday archival visit.
