Donald Trump says he wants to "leave it exactly where it is" on AI

During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington, President Trump wrote on Truth Social that artificial intelligence would be a major subject in their meetings and signaled he opposed altering the current arrangement, saying China held the same view and citing the Justice Department in connection with oversight. AI, trade, rare earths and geopolitical issues including Taiwan and Iran are expected to be on the agenda. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington and Beijing are discussing a system for notifying one another about AI-related events that pose risks to national security. U.S. AI executives have recently called for slower development to protect public safety, while a Chinese government spokesperson characterized a proposal for safety rules as unjust and an effort to restrain Chinese competitors.
