Xi Jinping says he is prepared to "steer the giant ship of the China-US relationship" with Trump

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the White House on Thursday for his first meeting there with President Donald Trump, who, along with first lady Melania Trump, had welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland the night before. Speaking to delegations from both countries, with no questions taken from reporters, Trump said the two leaders had a strong friendship and that trade had moved forward since his May trip to China. Xi said he was prepared to work with Trump on the future of the two countries' ties, and announced that 100,000 young Americans would be invited to study in China over five years and that two pandas would go to an Atlanta zoo. He also said the two nations could coexist peacefully and avoid the Thucydides trap.
