Polish police arrested a 31-year-old Ukrainian national on Thursday after a knife attack at a 17th-century Catholic abbey in Jaroslaw, close to the Ukrainian border, authorities said. Prosecutors said the man entered Poland from Germany, had been heading toward the border with Ukraine, then went to the monastery, took a kitchen knife and assaulted clergy members and congregants. One person died, identified by Polish media as a priest, and four were wounded. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault and said the case should go through the courts; Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the man would face the strongest penalties allowed under Polish law. Prosecutors said no motive was known, and doctors were to assess whether alcohol was a factor. Residents mourned the victim, and such stabbings are very rare in largely Catholic Poland.
