“the US side will adhere to the correct position of opposing Taiwan independence”

At this week's US-China summit, Xi Jinping's first state visit to the United States in over a decade, Taiwan was among major disputes that produced no meaningful progress. Beijing considers Taiwan the most important issue in the relationship. According to the Chinese readout, Xi pressed Donald Trump for a US formulation on Taiwan, which China claims, that would align with Beijing's preferences. That would shift Washington from language that does not endorse the island's independence to language rejecting it, a change Beijing would welcome; Trump has not said whether he agreed. The report says he appears no closer to approving a $14bn weapons package for Taiwan that Beijing wants scrapped, while the trade outcome was a two-month truce extension.
