“must not be allowed to spread the smell of gunpowder and blood in our region again”
During a Saturday meeting in Istanbul with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the current Israeli government should not be permitted to again introduce conflict to the region. Erdogan also cited the Islamabad Agreement between Washington and Tehran as a relief for the world and argued that any lasting solution must involve regional countries. Separately, a French newspaper reported that Turkey is building a space and ballistic missile launch site in central Somalia, which could extend missile range and potentially threaten Israel. The remarks and the report together underscore Turkey’s growing regional assertiveness and its strained relations with Israel.
