Donald Trump says Canada is "one of the worst countries in the entire world" amid tariff dispute

During Oval Office remarks on Monday, President Trump criticized Canada as a tariff dispute escalated. A ban on nearly $1 billion in Canadian imports took effect Tuesday, covering certain alcohol, dairy, molasses, and large motorcycles, after some provinces removed U.S. liquor from shelves. That followed this summer’s 50% U.S. tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian goods, which Trump linked to discrimination against American dairy, auto, and alcohol producers; Canada retaliated with tariffs of 15%, 25%, or 50%. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said his country was too dependent on U.S. trade and is seeking diversification, including a proposed special alliance with the European Union. EU President Ursula von der Leyen supported making Canada the bloc’s first associate member.
